What’s On Now?! ORSON WELLES’ Production Of “THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI” (1947)

The Lady From Shanghai (1948)

THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI

…May Not Be Exactly What ORSON WELLES Had Envisioned…

(((His Original-Cut Was About 155-Minutes, The Studio Release-Cut Was About 87-Minutes)))

…But You Can Totally Still See Plenty Of His Vision.

I Will Say It’s Loaded With Intrigue…

…Murder…

…Plot Twists…

…Exceptional, Quirk’ish Acting…

…And Quirk’ish’ly Exceptional Directing.

The Film Stars…

RITA HAYWORTH as Elsa Bannister/Rosalie

(((HAYWORTH Was Actually Still Married To WELLES At The Time This Flick Was Made)))

ORSON WELLES as Michael O’Hara

(((WELLES Also Wrote The Screenplay, Produced AND Directed)))

&

EVERETT SLOANE as Arthur Bannister

(((SLOANE Was Also A Performer With WELLES' "Mercury Players")))

Michael O’Hara, against his better judgement, hires on as a crew member of Arthur Bannister’s yacht, sailing to San Francisco. They pick up Grisby, Bannister’s law partner, en route. Bannister has a wife, Rosalie, who seems to like Michael much better than she likes her husband. After they dock in Sausalito, Michael goes along with Grisby’s weird plan to fake his (Grisby’s) murder so he can disappear untailed. He wants the $5000 Grisby has offered, so he can run off with Rosalie. But Grisby turns up actually murdered, and Michael gets blamed for it. Somebody set him up, but it is not clear who or how. Bannister (the actual murderer?) defends Michael in court. Written by John Oswalt <jao@jao.com> (Via The IMDB ((http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040525/plotsummary)))

THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI

…Is Now Over 65-Years-Old.

Yet, It Remains As Wildly Fun As It Ever Has.

As Others Have Said Of This Film…

…It Is TOTALLY Classic ORSON WELLES.

Kinda Hard Not To Be Since He Wrote, Starred-In, Produced, And Directed It.

CITIZEN KANE

…Is The Flick Most People Remember When Thinking About ORSON WELLES.

Of That, There Can Be No Debate.

But, Sometimes I’d Much Rather Kick-It-Back And Watch…

THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI

Period.

It’s A Lot More Fun, That’s A BIG Fo SHO.

When I Watch “CITIZEN KANE” I Say…

"Well, Now I've Seen It. I Can Totally Understand Why It's Such An Important Flick. I Might Watch It Again At Some Point."

When I See “THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI” I Say…

"Did I Just See What I Think I Just Saw?! I'm Gonna Have To Watch This One Again!"

See The Difference?

Trust Me, Watch Them Both.

Then You’ll Totally Get My Jive, My Peeps.

And It’s Worth It!

It’s So VERY Worth It!

No Foolies, Kids.

Sooo…

…If You Like Quality Murder-Mystery-Noir-Thrillers…

…And ORSON WELLES‘ Unique Filmmaker Qualities…

…I Say Give This One A Go.

THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI

…May Very Well Be Right Up Your Proverbial Alley, My Peeps.

You Really Should Trust Me On This One.

Give It A Go, Fo SHO Fo SHO!

M’Kay?!?

MMM’KAY!!!

😉       😀

“THEY HAVEN’T BUILT THE COFFIN THAT CAN HOLD HIM!” –(A Tagline From “DR. PHIBES RISES AGAIN!”)

DR. PHIBES RISES AGAIN!(1972) Starring VINCENT PRICE And ROBERT QUARRY !!! A True FAVE Of FAVES FLICK !!!

So… What’s On Now?! “THE FLESH AND THE FIENDS” (1960)

Alright, My Peeps…

…By A Showing Of Hands…

…How Many Of Y’all Have Even Heard Of…

THE FLESH AND THE FIENDS

…Starring…

PETER CUSHING

…And…

DONALD PLEASENCE

??? ???? ???

Hmm.

Not As Many As I’d Hoped…

…Though…

…More Than I’d Expected.

I Suppose That’s Positive…

…Right?

RIGHT!

😉

THE FLESH AND THE FIENDS

…Tells Us The Story Of…

DR. ROBERT KNOX

(PETER CUSHING)

…A Brilliant Surgeon Hell Bent On Furthering Medicine And Science In 19TH-Century Edinburgh, Scotland.

You See…

…He Needs Fresh Corpses For His Dissection And Experiments.

He’s Being Supplied By Two Nasty Sorts Of Gents…

BURKE

(GEORGE ROSE)

…And…

HARE

(DONALD PLEASENCE)

!!! !!!! !!!

Sounds Like A Cozy Arrangement, Right?!

Things Carry On Like This Until…

BURKE & HARE

…Begin Running-Out Of Viable Candidates.

So…

…They Turn To Murdering Folks, And Supplying…

DR. KNOX

…With The Freshest Corpses Possible.

BURKE & HARE

…Are Doing This For One Reason…

DR. KNOX

…Pays Very Well For The Bodies They Bring Him.

PETER CUSHING

…Is Spot On As…

DR. KNOX

…But…

DONALD PLEASENCE

…As…

HARE

…Nearly Steals The Whole Show.

I’ve Always Been A Huge Fan Of Both…

PETER CUSHING

…And…

DONALD PLEASENCE

…And They Do This Little Film A Pant-Load Of Justice.

It’s Entertaining.

It’s Creepy.

It’s Kinda Cheesy In Places.

But…

…For The Most Part…

…It’s Just A Really Good Shocker!!!

I’ll Warn You Now…

…This Is NOT An Easy Movie To Find.

It Took Much Much Time And Patience Before I Was Able To Get The Proper Version.

I Wanted The Slightly Longer…

…Slightly More Shocking…

…Slightly More Fun…

…International Version.

THE FLESH AND THE FIENDS

…Is Totally Worth A Watch…

…And It May Even Merit Multiple Viewings By Some Of Y’all.

I Couldn’t Tell You How Many Times I’ve Seen It…

…But I’ll Venture To Say More Than A Dozen Times.

I Love Most Anything Starring Either…

PETER CUSHING

…Or…

DONALD PLEASENCE

…So It’s A Real Treat For Me To See Two Classic Actors Of The Genera Squaring Off!

Check It Out, My Peeps.

You (likely) Won’t Be Disappointed.

😉

(NOT) Random (BIRTHDAY) Movie Mention: “THE TINGLER” (1959)

What A Better Way To Celebrate Than With A Classic-Fright-Flick, Eh!?!

VINCENT PRICE

…In…

WILLIAM CASTLE‘s

THE TINGLER

!!! !!! !!! !!! !!! !!! !!!

!!! !!! !!! !!! !!!

!!! !!! !!!

!!!

!

I KNOW, RIGHT!!!

Nothin’ But The Best ’round Here!!!

Fo SHO Fo SHO!!!

My Younger Brother Got Me This One On The DVD For My Birthday…

…Being That It’s About The Only GREAT Flick Starring…

VINCENT PRICE

…I Had Yet To Purchase Myself.

Yeah…

…I Know…

…You Just GOTTA Love The Guy.

My BROTHER, I Mean.

Though, You Should Love Dear VINCENT, Also.

😉

Alright…

…So…

…In This One…

VINCENT PRICE = A SCIENTIST COMMITTED TO HIS WORK

THE TINGLER (Itself) = THE WORK

…And Dear VINCENT Has Discovered Something Amazing:

FEAR CAN KILL YOU
!!! !!!

But, It’s Not What You’re Thinking.

THE TINGLER

…Is A Part Of Us.

ALL OF US.

It’s A Creature of Sorts…

…And It Lives IN/ON/ALONG OUR SPINAL-CORD.

If You Cry Aloud And SCREAM…

…You MIGHT Survive.

If You Lock-Up…

…And HOLD-IN That Fear/Fright…

THE TINGLER

…Can CRUSH…

…And SEVER…

…Your SPINE!!!

The MORE Scared You Become…

…The MORE And MORE It GROWS…

…And The Pain-Level RISES…

…And RISES…

…AND RISES…

…Until YOU Are DEAD!!!

!!! !!! !!!

And YES, My Peeps…

THE TINGLER

…Lives Within US ALL…

…And…

VINCENT PRICE

…Wants A LIVING SPECIMEN!!!

!!! !!! !!!

Sooo…

…Whom Better To Experiment With Than A Woman Who Is BOTH…

DEAF And MUTE.

Trust Me, My Peeps…

VINCENT PRICE

…Isn’t Your “A”-TYPICAL Mad-Scientist.

I Mean…

…Really…

…What’s The Difference Between…

“AN INSANE MAN”

…And…

“A MAN COMMITTED TO HIS ART/WORK”

…Whatever His ART/WORK May Be???

Kinda Hard To Tell Sometimes, Ain’t It!?!

EXACTLY, My Peeps, EXACTLY INDEED!!!

!!! !!! !!!

I Sincerely Don’t Wanna Give This Flick Away…

…BUT…

…Let’s Just Say…

THE TINGLER

…Is NOT The CHEESE-FEST You’re Currently Picturing Within Your Mind’s Eye.

No.

It’s Actually A Pretty SERIOUS Flick.

It’s A SMART…

…UNIQUE…

…GENUINELY ENTERTAINING Little SHOCKER!!!

It’s Honestly An EXCEPTIONAL “Fright-Flick”…

…And One Of THE BEST HORROR FLICKS Of It’s Time…

…Or ANY TIME, For That Matter.

The Idea Snags You.

VINCENT PRICE

…Keeps You Engaged.

And The Film Itself Lulls You In…

…GRABS HOLD…

…And DOESN’T LET GO!!!

It’s Simply A Near-Perfect Little Film.

Sooo…

…Next Time You’re Looking For Something…

FUN

…Or…

UNIQUE

…Or…

UNEXPECTEDLY ENTERTAINING

…You Should Totally Give…

THE TINGLER

...The TIME/EFFORT/CREDIT It’s Due.

I’ve Loved This Film For Over 20-Years, Now.

And NOW…

…Thanks To My Brother…

…I FINALLY HAVE MY OWN COPY AGAIN!!!

WOOT!!!
!!! !!! !!!

Enjoy Your Day, My Peeps, If It’s Possible.

If It’s NOT Possible…

Then MAKE IT THAT WAY, DAMMIT!!!

(teehehehehehe)

😉

(Not So) Random Movie Mention: BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA (1974)

Sam Peckinpah’s

“BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA”

…Is A Damned Fine Film.

I Purchased My Copy Back In 2005.

I’d Seen It Many Many Times Before Then…

…But That’s When The Edition I’m Watching, AS I TYPE THIS, Was Released.

Aside From 1969s…

“THE WILD BUNCH”

…And, To A Lesser Extent, 1972s…

“THE GETAWAY”

…This Film Is My Favorite From…

…Writer/Director Sam Peckinpah.

To ME, However, It’s The Performance Of The Film’s Star…

WARREN OATES

…That TRULY Sells It.

OATES Is An Old-School Actor Through AND Through.

He’s Always Had The Knack For Playing TOUGH And GRITTY Characters…

…In Equally TOUGH And GRITTY Films.

To ME…

“BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA”

…Is OATES’ MASTERPIECE.

Period.

I Don’t Know How Many Times I’ve Seen This Film…

…But I DO Know I Couldn’t Imagine ANYONE ELSE Playing His Part.

It’s One Of Those Situations Where The Part Truly Feels Like It Was Written Specifically FOR The Man.

The Film Itself Is Classic Peckinpah.

TOUGH.

GRITTY.

 VIOLENT.

BLOODY.

BRUTAL.

It’s Very Well Written.

It’s Beautifully Composed And Shot.

And It’s So Wonderfully Acted.

It’s A Film Most Folks I Know Have Never Bothered To Kick-Back And Watch.

And I Feel Bad For Those People.

They Simply Don’t Know What They’re Missing.

If You’re Looking For Something Different To Watch Tonight…

…Or Tomorrow…

…Or EVER…

…You’d Be Wise To Do Yourself A Favor And Give…

“BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA”

…A Chance.

It May Not Be A Film For Everyone…

…But It’s A Damned Fine Film…

…Regardless Of Whatever Else.

Fo SHO Fo SHO, My Peeps!

😉
