I understand that his words were paraphrased from a play which was popular during the Founding Fathers’ time. I say this because it’s an interesting fact, not in any way to take from Hale’s remarkable, time-immortalized bravery. In fact, although the words were not his own, and although they had undoubtedly been uttered by orators of far greater skill than had the martyred rebel, but over 2.25 centuries later, it’s Hale’s words that still sound.
